Dwayne Haskins is getting a second chance in the NFL, signing a reserve/future contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. Shortly following the team’s announcement of the signing, Haskins shared his first reaction on social media.
The reaction was Haskins’ first public tweet since the ordeal that ensued after photos surfaced of him attending a private party with strippers without wearing a mask.
It appears he will be changing to jersey number 3. Haskins wore the No. 7 at Bullis High School (Potomac, MD), in college at Ohio State and during his stint with the Washington Football Team.
Haskins had to ask for the blessings of Joe Theismann to wear No. 7 in Washington. However, he won’t get such an opportunity in Pittsburgh, as Steelers legend and starting QB Ben Roethlisberger currently wears the same number.
What’s more important is the fresh start for Haskins. Washington selected 15th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft with hopes of him becoming the franchise quarterback. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards in large due to his struggles both on and off the field. Washington released him last month, just short of two full seasons after drafting him.
Multiple hiccups has put his work ethic and passion in doubt, including two COVID-19 protocol violations. The Steelers are an ideal team and culture to resurrect his career under the tutelage of head coach Mike Tomlin, who shares agents with Haskins. It will be interesting to see if Haskins overcomes the hurdles that challenged him in Washington to be more productive.
