The Washington Wizards and free agent center Alex Len have agreed to a one-year deal, according to Shams Charania.
Len was waived by by the Toronto Raptors earlier this week. After clearing waivers, Len had multiple suitors but chose the Wizards, Charania added.
The one-year deal is for the league minimum, according to Chase Hughes of NBC Sports. Len is still owed money from the Raptors.
The Wizards have had six straight games postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. However, the team had to address a glaring need at center with their lack of depth in the frontcourt.
Starting center Thomas Bryant was lost for the season with a torn ACL. The Wizards turned to Robin Lopez and undersized Moe Wagner to help fill the void of Bryant. The team also applied for a disable player exception.
Earlier this week, the Wizards released center Anzejs Pasecniks to make room for an upgrade. Len’s availability opened the door to land a capable seven-foot post player.
Len has a great deal of familiarity with the Washington area. The Ukraine native played two years in college at the University of Maryland before being selected fifth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Len spent five seasons with the Phoenix Suns. He also played with Atlanta, Sacramento and seven games this season with Toronto. He has averaged 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds during his eight-year career.
