Capitals’ Tom Wilson day-to-day with lower body injury

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson is day-to-day with a lower body injury. Head coach Peter Laviolette revealed Wilson’s status following the Capitals’ 4-3 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres Friday.

Wilson will be examined Saturday and the hope is the injury is not too bad. Wilson was seen talking to the team trainer at the start of the third period. He played two shifts in the period before exiting the game and going back to the locker room.

Wilson leads the team in points with six and goals with three through five games this season.

The Capitals are already without forwards Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, defenseman Dmitry Orlov and goalie Ilya Samsonov. Each of the four are expected to miss at least the next three games while on the COVID absence list. Any length of absence of Wilson could be detrimental for the shorthanded Capitals.
