Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera is officially cancer-free. His daughter, Courtney Rivera revealed the wonderful news on Twitter after the coach’s check-up Thursday.
Stephanie Rivera, Ron’s wife, echoed the news shared by their daughter.
Ron Rivera announced in August he was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer. He underwent seven weeks of treatment during the NFL season.
Rivera’s struggles through his battle were documented. He had to adjust his daily routine. That included scaling back some of his workload which became increasing difficult, considering he was in his first year as Washington’s head coach.
His most difficult week was in Week 4. Then, he missed two practices leading into Washington’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. He needed two bags of IV fluid before kickoff. At times he was seen sitting down on the bench during the game.
Rivera also used a golf cart periodically during practices throughout the seven-week ordeal. Additionally, he needed an IV at halftime of the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Yet, he never missed coaching a game.
Rivera’s final cancer treatment was on Oct. 26. His battle inspired his team, as Washington overcame a 2-7 start to win the NFC East division title by winning five of their last seven games.
