Washington interested in Raiders QB Derek Carr?

The search for a formidable quarterback for Washington could turn to Las Vegas Raiders’ Derek Carr. After striking out in the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes, expect Washington to be linked to a number of available quarterbacks. Insert Carr in the latest round of rumors.

According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Washington is one of multiple teams interested in a trade for Carr.

“It begins with the pursuit of Carr by multiple teams. Among the clubs that could get involved are the Colts, Bears, Patriots and the Washington Football Team. Depending on what happens in New Orleans, the Saints could be potential suitors as well.”

The issue is the price tag for Carr. Bonsignore writes the Raiders are seeking two first-round picks to then flip to the Houston Texans for the disgruntled Deshaun Watson. Sending two first-rounders for Carr seems a bit steep. A lot steep.

Washington reportedly did offer the No. 19 overall pick in this year’s draft, a third-round pick and a defensive starter for Stafford. It’s clear Washington is willing to go all-in for the QB they so desperately need. But, the question is would they do so for Derek Carr??

Two firsts are a lot less steep than the asking price for Watson. Houston, who continues to hold on to hope of soothing the discord with their franchise QB, is reported to be seeking three first-round picks, two second-rounders and two young defensive players.

Carr had a great 2020 season in retrospect. He threw for a career-high 4,103 yards — his third straight 4,000-yard season. He also tossed 27 touchdowns against nine interceptions. His 101.8 quarterback rating and 71.0 QBR are his career bests.

Those are numbers crush the the production Washington had from four quarterbacks combined in 2020. Alex Smith, Dwayne Haskins, Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke combined for 3,796 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Their combined quarterback rating was 80.1 and only Allen had a QBR higher than 48.2 with 74.7. However, he is coming off a serious ankle injury.

So why it seems far-fetched, maybe just maybe, Washington sees Carr as a viable and more realistic option. Yet, until we hear more about their interest in Carr, it’s a wait and see.
