The Washington Wizards announced Wednesday backup point guard Ish Smith is out six-to-eight weeks with a right proximal quadriceps injury. Smith will be re-evaluated in three weeks.
Smith suffered the injury on Feb. 12 against the New York Knicks. Subsequently, he missed the following two games.
“It’s not great news, not at all. 6-8 weeks, that’s a big chunk of the season, but if anyone can handle it with a positive attitude, it’s Ish,” Wizards head coach Scott Brooks said, per Fred Katz of The Athletic.
Smith, 32, is playing in the second of a two-year deal with the Wizards. This season he has appeared in 19 games, averaging 5.2 points, 4.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds. He previously missed four games while in the NBA’s health and safety protocols.
Raul Neto is expected to get a considerable bump in minutes with Smith absence. Troy Brown Jr. is also anticipated to see increase in playing time.
