Max Scherzer wants fans at ballparks: ‘I don’t see any reason why not’

Max Scherzer believes there is no reason why fans cannot be allowed in ballparks this season in some capacity. The coronavirus pandemic shut out fans for the most part in Major League Baseball last year. However with vaccination plans rolling out across the United States, it begs the question if fans will be allowed to attend games in 2021.

To Scherzer playing outdoors should open the door for fans to be in the stands.

“Fans should be in the stands, 100 percent,” Scherzer told reporters, per Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington. “You can do it, we’re in outdoor stadiums. Fans just need to be allowed to come in the ballpark. We can engineer a way around it. I don’t see any reason why not. So hopefully cooler heads prevail, we look at this pragmatically and we get some Nationals fans out there because trust me, as all ballplayers, we definitely miss them and we miss the atmosphere that they bring.”

It’s unclear how MLB will approach fan attendance this season. The Miami Marlins have already announced they’ll allow a limited amount of fans.

Earlier this month, the NFL allowed about 25,000 fans to attend the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida. But MLB clubs will have to work with their local government and health officials before making a decision.

Meanwhile, the Nationals have yet to announce any official plans on allowing fans to Nationals Park. However, season ticket plans are available for purchase for all of their 81 home games.
