Contract talks between All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff and the Washington Football Team are set to being in the coming days. While Washington prefers a long-term deal, the team could use the franchise tag on Scherff for a second straight year, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.
According to people familiar with the situation, Washington could again use a franchise tag on Scherff, but the organization appears more interested in signing him to a long-term deal, with talks expected to start in the coming days.
Brandon Scherff made just over $15 million in 2020 on a franchise tag. A second tag would pay him $18.04 million in 2021. Washington has until Mar. 9 to exercise the franchise tag. If they so with Scherff, both sides would have four more months to negotiate a long-term deal.
A new deal is expected to reset the market for offensive guards. Washington is projected to have $38.3 million in salary cap space this offseason, according to Over the Cap.
Scherff , 29, has previously expressed his desire to remain with Washington. He had a career-year last season. In 857 offensive snaps, he allowed three sacks and was penalized a mere two times. He became the first Washington first-team All-Pro during the Dan Snyder era.
