The Washington Football appears out of the Sam Darnold sweepstakes despite a report by the Athletic earlier Tuesday. Washington agreed to a one-year deal with Ryan Fitzpatrick, which naturally put them out of the market for acquiring another quarterback.
Yet, Connor Hughes of the Athletic reported Washington “had not ruled out” trading for Darnold despite the signing of Fitzpatrick.
However, two reports that followed dispelled the rumor. Kim Jones of NFL Network reports Washington is “no longer a landing spot” for Sam Darnold. Dianna Russini of ESPN also shot down Washington’s interest.
This sounds more like the Jets trying to spike Darnold’s trade value even though one of his biggest reported suitors bowing out. Washington is settled at quarterback. Fitzpatrick, who will make $10 million with a chance at another $2 million in incentives, is expected to enter training camp as the starting quarterback.
Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen will also factor into the equation. Washington appears set to pivot their search for a long-term answer at QB until at least 2022. For now, they’ll look to defend their NFC East division title next season with “Fitzmagic” at the helm.
