Patrick Ewing and the Georgetown Hoyas gained a lot of momentum towards the future of the program with a magical run to win their first Big East Tournament title since 2007. However, Georgetown was dealt a shocking blow on Thursday. Star center Qudus Wahab has entered the transfer portal, the school announced.
“Q was an important piece of our success this year and he needs to do what he feels is best for him,” Ewing said in a statement. “I want to wish him luck in his future. After an exciting postseason, we are ready to focus on the 2021-22 season.”
The 6-foot-11 Wahab started 25 games this season as a sophomore, averaging 12.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. He averaged 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds during the Hoyas’ four-game run in the Big East Tournament. He finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds in Georgetown’s season-ending loss to Colorado in the NCAA Tournament.
In December, Wahab sang praises of Ewing, when his head coach compared him to three Georgetown legends, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning and Ewing himself.
Following the Hoyas’ first round win over Marquette in the Big East Tournament, Ewing said he believed Wahab could be the best big man in the country by the team he departs Georgetown.
Wahab was expected to be an integral part of Georgetown’s rebuild. The Hoyas have the nation’s ninth-ranked recruiting class, featuring five-star guard Aminu Mohammed and forward Ryan Mutombo. Now the incoming group will join without Wahab playing in the middle.
