Deni Avdija wheeled off court after landing awkwardly on leg

Washington Wizards rookie forward Deni Avdija exited Wednesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors in a wheel chair with an apparent lower leg injury. Avdija landed awkwardly attempting a layup just before halftime.

He immediately grabbed his lower right leg in agony. Wizards teammate Jordan Bell draped a practice jersey over Avdija’s ankle. After being attended to by trainers, Avdija was placed in the wheel chair and rolled into the locker room.

The Wizards ruled Avdija out for the remainder of the game with a right ankle injury.

Avdija was drafted ninth overall in November’s NBA Draft out after he won the Israeli League MVP in 2020.

In his first season with the Wizards, Avdija has played in 53 games, including 31 starts. Entering Wednesday’s night game, he averaged 6.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 23.5 minutes per game. He is shooting 41.7% from the field, including 31.5% from three.
