Alex Ovechkin apparently injured late in Caps’ win over Isles

Alex Ovechkin appeared to suffer an undisclosed injury late in the third period of the Washington Capitals 1-0 shootout win over the New York Islanders. Ovechkin pulled up favoring his right leg during his final shift with under three minutes remaining in the third, according to Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic.

Ovechkin did not skate any shifts in overtime.

Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette was tightlipped about the captain’s status following the game. All Laviolette offered was Ovechkin “wasn’t available” in overtime.

After a slow start to the season, the 35-year old Alex Ovechkin has been in a scoring surge. He is fourth in the NHL with 24 goals. He also has added 18 assists for 42 points in 43 games this season.

All focus now shifts to Ovechkin’s availability for Saturday’s rematch with the Islanders.
