Offensive lineman Ereck Flowers is headed back to the Washington Football Team after a one-year stint with the Miami Dolphins. Washington is acquiring Flowers in a trade while swapping seventh-round picks, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Washington will slide down 14 spots and make the 258th overall pick in the draft. Basically the next to last pick. The Dolphins move up to the 244th overall pick and offloads some salary.
Sounds like a steal for Washington to get a quality starting offensive lineman who can play guard and left tackle, right? Well, Flowers is sweetening the deal for Washington even more.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Flowers has agreed to restructure his contract which will lower the price tag for Washington. The Dolphins will pay roughly $6 million of his 2021 salary, while Washington will be on the hook for $3 million. Flowers gets a fully guaranteed $9 million this season and Washington will pay just one-third of that.
Also, Washington has a potential out following the 2021 season that if they move on from Flowers they’d encounter no dead cap for the 2022 season.
Flowers was once considered a first-round bust after playing four forgettable seasons with the New York Giants and a brief half of season in Jacksonville. He signed a one-year deal with Washington in 2019 and thrived. When he hit free agency, Washington wanted to bring him back, but he ultimately signed a three-year, $30 million deal with Miami last year.
Now, he is back where he resurrected his pro career. Washington gets a plug in left guard with the abilities to give the team flexibility across the offensive line.
