Washington to host former Bears LT Charles Leno Jr.

Former Chicago Bears left tackle Charles Leno Jr. will have a free agent visit with the Washington Football Team Monday, according to John Keim of ESPN.

Leno was released by the Bears earlier this week after seven seasons in Chicago. He made 93 consecutive starts at left tackle. But with salary cap issues, the Bears moved on from Leno after drafting Teven Jenkins of Oklahoma State in the second round of last week’s NFL Draft.

Washington already has a number of in-house options at left tackle. Last season Geron Christian started six games before a knee injury ended his season. Cornelius Lucas, a former Bears tackle, started eight games in his place and seemingly played well.

Additionally, Washington drafted Samuel Cosmi from Texas in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft. While some project Cosmi more as a guard, Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Cosmi would start out competing at left tackle. However, that was said before Leno became available.

Leno provides an immediate boost to the position for Washington. He gives them someone who has a lot of experiences starting the position in the NFL. Adding Leno would give Cosmi more time to develop and could provide a security blanket for Christian.

Nonetheless, it’s apparent Washington is still searching for answers at left tackle since the Trent Williams saga and eventual departure. Monday will give the team a chance to check out where Leno is physically and what his price may be for his services.
