Capitals’ Michael Raffl scores improbable game-winner with shot from below the goal line

Michael Raffl picked a great time and emphatic way to score his first goal in a Washington Capitals uniform. With three seconds remaining, the Capitals forward managed to shoot the puck from below the goal line into the net. The goal broke a 1-1 tie to push Washington over the Boston Bruins 2-1 in the regular season finale.

Just how he managed to score from such a tight angle?

It appears his shot banked off the head of Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman before crossing the goal line in the net.

Raffl joined the Capitals from the Philadelphia Flyers just ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline. He previously had two assists through nine games with Washington before Tuesday’s game-winner.

Capitals defenseman Zdeno Chara retrieved the puck for Raffl’s goal.

With the win, the Capitals finish the season 36-15-5 during the pandemic shortened season. Boston finishes 33-16-7. The same two teams will now embark on a best-of-seven playoff series, starting Saturday in Washington. The teams split the regular season series with each team winning four games.
