Washington releases offensive tackles Morgan Moses and Geron Christian

The Washington Football Team have released offensive tackles Morgan Moses and Geron Christian, the team announced Thursday. Head coach Ron Rivera continues overhauling Washington’s roster from the previous regime of Bruce Allen and Jay Gruden.

A third-round draft pick in 2014, Moses has started every game since 2015 primarily at right tackle. He had also become one of the team’s vocal leaders. Last season, he also started two games at left tackle after injuries swept through Washington’s offensive line.

Washington had granted Moses’ agent permission to seek a trade last week.

Christian was a third-round selection of Washington’s in 2018. After two seasons as the swing tackle, Christian got his opportunity to start at left tackle last season. He made six starts before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Washington will save $7.75 million in salary cap for releasing Moses and an additional $920,000 for waiving Christian.

Moving on from Moses and Christian is a bit of a surprise to some. However, Washington has a surplus at offensive tackle after adding a couple of pieces this offseason. First, they selected Samuel Cosmi out of Texas in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft.

After the draft, Washington signed former Chicago Bears left tackle Charles Leno Jr. Washington also has Cornelius Lucas, who the team signed in 2020 as a swing tackle, but ultimately started eight games at left tackle in place of the injured Christian.

Then there is last year’s fourth-round draft pick Saahdiq Charles, who has a load of potential but is coming off a season-ending knee injury as well. Although, it’s unclear whether Charles will play tackle or guard.

Nonetheless, Moses and Christian add to Rivera’s roster overhaul from the previous regime. That included trading longtime left tackle Trent Williams to San Francisco last season after he became disgruntled.

As for this season, Leno is expected to start at left tackle. Meanwhile, Cosmi or Lucas are more likely to slot in at right tackle as Washington looks to repeat as NFC East division champions.
