Landon Collins says he will be ready for Week 1 of the upcoming regular season coming off a torn Achilles he suffered in October last year. Tuesday he was at the Washington Football Team’s voluntary OTAs, mimicking movement of a strong safety from the side as the team practiced.
It’s the position he will play when he returns to the field. Once upon a time, there was speculation he would switch to linebacker with the emergence of Kamren Curl in his place last season. However, defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio is on record saying Collins is going to play strong safety and there was no thought to otherwise.
Speaking to the media for the first time about the subject, Collins said he laughed at the notion of him switching positions.
“I was laughing at it. I was drafted as a safety,” Collins said per, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “If someone was going to come talk to me about it, we’ll talk about it. But, that’s about it.
“If we have packages they want to put me in, I’m always open to it because I’d have all of us DBs on the field anyway, Collins continued. “The more DBs, the merrier.”
Washington complicated matters at safety more when it added veteran Bobby McCain after the draft. They now have multiple starting caliber safeties when considering Jeremy Reaves and Deshazor Everett as well.
Where they all fit will be one of the most intriguing storylines for Washington throughout training camp. But for now, it appears Landon Collins is the strong safety. But given the flexibility of the group there Collins may be okay with lining up elsewhere on an occasion.
