Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans may have played his last game of this NBA season. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Bertans suffered a grade 2 calf strain and need four-to-six weeks to recover.
Bertans struggled mightily through the first three games of the Wizards’ first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers. However, Monday he had a breakout performance in Game 4, scoring a playoff career-high 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 23 minutes.
Bertans was making his second straight start after a dreadful scoreless outing in Game 2. He played with a bit more energy, making 3-of-6 from three, and all four of his free throw attempts.
Unfortunately, he came up limping in the second half and immediately headed to the locker room. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game shortly afterwards.
Now, he is certain to miss the rest of the series against Philadelphia. Bertans averaged 9.3 points while shooting 40.7% from the field and 34.8% from three in the series.
Washington has been banged up throughout the series. Leading scorer Bradley Beal is playing through a strained hamstring. Additionally, Russell Westbrook is hobbled by an ankle injury that he suffered in Game 2. Plus, both Ish Smith and Raul Neto have been nicked up.
Despite his struggles before Monday, the Wizards will feel the absence of Bertans moving forward in the series.
The Wizards staved off elimination avoiding the four-game sweep by winning Game 4 122-114. Game 5 is Wednesday in Philadelphia. If Washington is to extend their season they’ll ave to do so without the sharpshooter.
