Nationals walk off Mets with Yan Gomes single

The Washington Nationals picked up their fifth straight win beating the New York Mets in dramatic fashion. Catcher Yan Gomes delivered a clutch single to walk off the Mets in the ninth.

The game was in a scoreless tie entering the bottom frame of the ninth. Juan Soto drew an eight-pitch walk to lead off the inning. Then Ryan Zimmerman ripped a single to right that moved Soto to third base.

The Nationals had runners on the corners when Yan Gomes stepped to the plate to face Mets closer Edwin Diaz. Then Gomes delivered. He pulled a fastball down the third-base line to score Soto for the 1-0 win.

The blown saves was Diaz’s first of the season. He previously was 14-of-14 in save opportunities. With the win Washington improves to 31-35, six games back of the 35-27 Mets in the NL East.
