Darryl Morsell is now a former Maryland Terrapin. The senior guard announced on Monday he will be transferring to Marquette to play for first-year head coach Shaka Smart.
Morsell, a Baltimore native, played four seasons at Maryland and was a key player since his freshman year. Last season he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. However in April, Morsell announced he was entering the NBA Draft process while maintaining his college eligibility and entering the NCAA transfer portal.
He didn’t rule out a reutnr to Maryland. But as the process went on it became increasingly apparent he was going to play somewhere else.
Morsell has been sidelined while recovering from shoulder surgery. An injury that limited his options of playing overseas and in the G League, according to Jeff Ermann of Inside MD Sports. Thus a return to college for a fifth season was clear.
He will be allowed to play a fifth season thanks to the NCAA provision to grant all student athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now he joins the Golden Eagles under Smart. Smart left Texas this spring for Marquette after six seasons. The VCU coach also added assistant DeAndre Haynes from Maryland this April to join his staff. Thus, Morsell will be with a familiar face in Marquette.
Now, Maryland will shift it focus on the decision of guard Aaron Wiggins. Wiggins also entered the NBA Draft process. He was invited to the NBA Draft Combine and his return remains questionable.
