Washington Nationals slugger Kyle Schwarber is on a historic home run tear that has him in elite company. Monday against the New York Mets, Schwarber crushed his sixth lead off home run in 17 games as a leadoff hitter.
He set the Nationals record for most home runs hit a month. Then, he led off the fifth inning with his second blast of the game to add to his franchise mark.
Monday’s pair of homers is the fifth multi-home run game for Schwarber since June 13. His home run tear has reached historic heights.
First, he ties an MLB record with Washington Senators great Frank Howard for the most home runs in a nine-game span with 11.
Schwarber also joins Barry Bonds (2001) and Sammy Sosa (1998) as the only players in MLB history to hit 15 home runs during a 17-game span.
Schwarber stands alone as the only MLB player to hit 15 home runs in 17 days, according to Stats.
It’s a tear that has been very impressive. Schwarber was moved up to leadoff hitter on June 12 and since, he has destroyed just about everything moving.
Monday he went 3-for-5 with his two homers highlighted in the Nationals’ 8-4 win over the Mets. In 17 games as the lead off hitter, Schwarber is now hitting .353 with a 1.465 OPS, 15 home runs and 26 RBI.
