According to Fred Katz and David Aldridge of the Athletic, Washington recently interviewed Ham, who is 47 years of age. Katz adds there’s some support for Ham within the team building.
Ham played eight seasons with six different teams in the NBA, including one season with the Wizards (1997-98) He also played overseas and in the NBA G League before ending his pro career in 2008.
That’s when his coaching career began. He was an assistant in the G League with the then-Albuquerque Thunderbirds. He became the head coach of the franchise in 2010-11. Ham became an assistant in the NBA starting off with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011. He then joined the Atlanta Hawks under Mike Budenholzer before following him to Milwaukee in 2018.
Ham adds to an growing list of candidates that have interviewed for the Wizards’ head coach opening. Sam Cassell, Wes Unseld Jr., Scott Morrison, Willie Green, Chris Fleming and Chris Quinn have reportedly interviewed with Washington. The team also has interest in Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley.
The Wizards are breaking away from its recent tradition of retread head coaches. Instead, the focus of their search has appeared to be assistant coaches looking to be a first-time head coach.
