Washington Wizards narrow search for head coach to prominent assistants

The Washington Wizards have narrowed their search for a new head coach down to several assistants, including Jamahl Mosley, Darvin Ham, Charles Lee and Wes Unseld Jr., according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

It’s unclear if the list of candidates are just the four names mentioned or those are the prominent names. Washington has interviewed Sam Cassell, Chris Fleming, Scott Morrison, Chris Quinn and Willie Green according to multiple reports.

All the names mentioned are assistants who have yet to get the opportunity to be head coach.

Mosley is a Dallas Mavericks assistant that has a close relationship with superstar Luke Doncic. Despite their relationship, Mosley was overlooked for their head coach vacancy that was filled by Jason Kidd.

Both Ham and Lee are on the Milwaukee Bucks coaching staff that is headed to the NBA Finals. Ham has support within the Wizards’ building according to a report by the Athletic.

Unseld is the son of Washington Bullets legend Wes Unseld. The younger Unseld was an assistant with the Wizards from 2005 until 2011. Since, he has been on the staffs of the Golden State Warriors, Orlando Magic and most recently the Denver Nuggets.

Both Unseld and Mosley are considered “serious” candidates for the Orlando Magic opening, according to Wojnarowski.

The Wizards are looking to replace Scott Brooks, whom the team parted ways with after five seasons. By the looks of things, their next pick will be a first-time head coach.
