The Washington Football Team will reveal its new permanent name and logo in early 2022, team president Jason Wright told Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Wright added the team’s traditional colors of burgundy and gold that are entrenched in the team’s history will remain with the new logo and name.
Washington dropped its old moniker and logo in July 2020 after outcry that the name was racist and disparaging to Native Americans. Owner Dan Snyder placed a temporary name the “Washington Football Team” in time for the 2020 NFL season.
Meanwhile, the team has gone through a thorough process of picking a new re-branding name and logo. Washington hired a digital creative agency Code and Theory to aid through the re-branding process.
The team also launched a website (washingtonjourney.com) to be transparent with fans about the re-branding process. Washington has also received over 40,000 submissions for a new name from fans, focus groups and surveys.
Fans of the team and rivals have joked about the “team with no name.” But Washington is be particular in clearing trademark and legal issues with a more permanent name and logo. Redwolves, Warriors and Red Tails have been just a few fan favorites that have been widely discussed on social media.
The team will stick with Washington Football Team through the 2021 season. However, according to Jason Wright expect a new name for the team ahead of the 2022 season.
