Nationals select Dusty Baker’s son, Darren, in 10th round of MLB Draft

The Washington Nationals selected Darren Baker, the son of Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, in the 10th round of the MLB Draft. Darren has a great deal of familiarity with the Nationals, as his father managed the club for two seasons (2016-2017), winning back-to-back NL East division titles.

Darren Baker is s second baseman out of the University of California at Berkeley. As a senior this season, Baker hit .327/.402/.354 with 17 RBis and 28 stolen bases.

He is known as a speedster and defensive infielder. He made Pac-12 All-Defensive Team in both 2019 and 2021.

Many will recall when San Francisco Giants first baseman JT Snow had to scoop Darren out of harms way at home plate during the 2002 World Series.

This is the second time Washington has drafted Baker. He was initially taken by the Nats in 2017 in the 27th round. He opted to go to college instead to develop his game.
