Three people were shot outside of Nationals Park, forcing Saturday’s game between the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres to be suspended in the middle of the sixth inning. The gunshots could be heard on television just as the Nationals broadcast on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network was headed to a commercial break.
Loud pops ranged out just as umpires did a substance-check on Nationals relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan. At least seven shots could be heard in the background.
There was panic throughout the ballpark as fans feared the possibility of a mass shooting. However, DC Police and the Nationals quickly assessed the situation to being an isolated shooting involving at least one car. Authorities are in search of a second vehicle that possibly may be connected to the shooting.
Two of the victims shot are believed to have been involved in a shootout. A third victim was a female fan attending the Nationals-Padres game.
