Saturday’s game between the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres was suspended after a shooting right outside of Nationals Park. The shooting happened on the outside of the third base gate of the ballpark.
DC Police says three people were shot in the shooting. Initially the Metropolitan Police Department said four were shot.
DC Police responded to two people suffering from gunshot wounds on the 1500 block of South Capitol Street located in Southwest section of Washington, DC. At least one car was involved in the shooting. Another victim walked into a local hospital.
Two of the victims are believed to have been involved in the shooting, per Tom Hunsicker of WUSA-9. The third was a female fan attending the game. She has non-life threatening injuries.
The gunshots could be heard throughout the stadium in the middle of the sixth inning. The Nationals players were walking off the field to preparing to bat in the bottom frame of the inning when the shots ranged out.
Fans sitting in the left field section of the stadium scrambled to take cover, running onto the field. Some were allowed in the dugout by Padres players, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado. The situation led to a chaotic and scary scene.
Despite initial reports of an active shooter, DC Police says at no point fans inside of the stadium were at risk.
The Nationals trailed the Padres 8-4. The game will resume from the bottom of the sixth Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm before the teams play their series finale.
