Tres Barrera had a glorious moment Monday when the Washington Nationals rookie catcher hit his first MLB home run. Barrera took Marlins starter Ross Detwiler deep in the second inning to extend Washington’s lead to 5-0. It was the third of four home runs hit off the former Nats pitcher.
However, as accustomed for rookies hitting their first career home run, the Nationals responded by giving Barrera the silent treatment.
As Barrera entered the dugout just about none of his teammates acknowledged the feat.
Barrera got a few high-fives from the coaching staff, including manager Dave Martinez. But that was about it.
The injured Kyle Schwarber looked on from the top of the steps. Meanwhile everyone else was avoiding eye contact with Barrera. Schwarber tried his best to not crack a smile, as Barrera walked through the dugout surrounded by silence.
Ultimately, Schwarber gave the okay with a nod of his head. From there Josh Bell and Juan Soto, both who homered in Monday’s game, were the first to joyfully celebrate with Barrera before everyone else joined.
