A day after the Washington Football Team locked in defensive tackle Jonathan Allen for the next five seasons, Washington extended another breakthrough star. This time it was on offense. According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, Washington and tight end Logan Thomas has agreed on a three-year contract extension.
Garafolo later added the deal is worth $24 million with $10.3 million in guarantees. That makes Thomas the seventh-highest paid tight end in the league.
Thomas stood to make $2.32 million in base salary in 2021 prior to the contract extension.
He was drafted into the NFL as a quarterback by the Arizona Cardinals in 2014. The Virginia Tech product struggled to stick with a team before returning to his high school position of tight end in late 2016 with the Detroit Lions.
Since, he has developed into a solid pass-catching option. He played two seasons with the Buffalo Bills. Last season, he signed a two-year deal with the Washington Football Team after one-year second stint with the Lions.
In his first season in Washington, Thomas shined with 72 catches, 630 yards and six receiving touchdowns. All of which were obvious career highs.
While at the age of 30, Thomas will enter his fifth season as a tight end. It’s apparent Washington sees him as a staple of the offense for the foreseeable future. He’ll be expected to improve on his great 2020 season alongside an revamped wide receiver group led by Terry McLaurin and free-agent add Curtis Samuel.
