Kyle Allen tweaked his surgically repaired ankle in practice Saturday, head coach Ron Rivera announced to reporters.
Rivera did not go into further detail so it’s unclear at this time how significant the tweak it. The timing of his setback isn’t ideal.
Rivera said Allen has started to “get back into the mix” for the battle with Taylor Heinicke for Washington’s QB2 behind presumed starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Allen is attempting to come back this season after suffering a gruesome dislocated ankle injury in Week 9 of last season. He started four games in 2020 for Washington before the season-ending injury.
This offseason, Allen signed a one-year, $850,000 deal as an exclusive rights free agent. Washington acquired Allen last season in a trade with the Carolina Panthers. He backed up former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins before replacing him as starter in Week 5.
Once tabbed a long-term project and threat to Haskins. Allen is now hoping to make the roster in 2021. Whether it’s a tweak or a setback will affect his chances.
