Former Washington Nationals catcher Yan Gomes didn’t waste time getting acclimated with his new team, the Oakland Athletics. Gomes made his debut with the A’s on Sunday and in his second at-bat hammered a go-ahead three-run homer.
With the game tied 3-3 in the third, Gomes lifted a 92-mph fastball from Detmers 421 feet into the left field bleachers.
The Nationals traded Gomes and Josh Harrison to the Athletics before Friday’s trade deadline for three prospects.
Gomes went 2-for-5 in his A’s debut. Interestingly, Gomes had to play the game in his Nationals’ catcher gear.
According to Paul Lukas of Uni Watch, Gomes’ new green gear wasn’t ready in time for Sunday’s game. So, Gomes had his chest protect and shinguards spray-painted green. However, the red trim on the edges of chest protector was visible.
Yan Gomes played three seasons with the Nationals after spending six in Cleveland. He appeared in 190 games for Washington and was part of their 2019 World Series championship team.
Now alongside Harrison and recently acquired Starlin Marte, Gomes will be looking for a another championship run in Oakland.
