It didn’t take long for Chase Young to pick up right where he left off last year. The Washington Football Team star defensive end made an impact play on the opening drive of the preseason opener.
On third down, Young beat New England Patriots left tackle Isaiah Wynn off the edge before coming away with a strip sack on quarterback Cam Newton.
The strip sack should have produced a turnover. Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne had a golden opportunity to recover the football. Instead, he was looking for glory, tried to scoop the loose ball. However, he couldn’t get his hands on it and the Patriots were able to recover setting up a 4th-down punt.
Nonetheless, that shouldn’t diminish Young’s big play. Last season, Young collected 7.5 sacks and forced four fumbles. He also recovered three, returning one back for a touchdown. He was named 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year. Alongside Montez Sweat, Young is expected to build off his stellar rookie season in Year 2.
