Ron Rivera wanted to warn Cam Newton on Chase Young sack

It didn’t take much time. New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton got introduced to 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young on the Patriots’ opening drive in Thursday’s preseason opener.

Young beat Patriots left tackle Isaiah Wynn off the edge before getting a strip sack on Newton. Young got off the edge so clean, Washington head coach Ron Rivera saw the hit on Newton.

Rivera felt compelled to warn his former quarterback if not for realizing they’re no longer on the same team.

“I saw it coming and I wanted to yell, ‘Look out,’ but he’s is on the other team now,” Rivera said to Michael Silver mid-game of Newton.

Rivera coached Newton from 2011-2019 while both were with the Carolina Panthers. Together, they made the playoffs four times and appeared in Super Bowl 50. That season, Newton won NFL MVP.

Thus seeing Young turn the corner, for that moment, Ron Rivera had a flashback of countless times he probably yelled “Look out” towards Newton. Rivera ultimately realized Newton was on the other team this time around.
