The Washington Football Team made a series of roster moves Sunday morning ahead of practice. Wide receiver Curtis Samuel was activated off the PUP list, as Washington released three players, running back Lamar Miller, cornerback Chris Miller and wide receiver Kelvin Harmon.
Washington has to cut down its roster from 90 to 85 players by Tuesday in the first round of cuts.
Of the names released, Harmon sticks out the most. Lamar Miller is a former Pro Bowl running back, but Washington invested more into Harmon.
Harmon had become popular among fans as he stood out in his rookie season in 2019. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL during an off-season workout last year that caused him the entire 2020 season.
He was looking to bounce back this season and looked good during training camp. However, Washington has since reloaded at wide receiver with a plethora of talent. Samuel was the big free agent pickup this off-season to go alongside star wide out Terry McLaurin.
But Washington didn’t stop there, adding veteran Adam Humphries and then drafting Dyami Brown and Dax Milne. That group are additions to an already intriguing mix that includes Cam Sims, Steven Sims Jr., Isaiah Wright and Antonio Gandy-Golden.
That doesn’t include DeAndre Carter, who is in the mix on special teams.
Harmon’s odds to make the team decreased tremendously at no fault of his own. With such a stacked group of names, being able to play special teams and contribute in the return game makes a huge difference in making or not making the team.
Harmon wasn’t a factor in special teams or the return game. McLaurin and Samuel are already on that list, but are set to be the biggest two factors at wide receiver for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Cutting Kelvin Harmon now before final cuts on August 31, gives Harmon time to land somewhere else. He blossomed with two 1,000-yard receiving seasons in college at NC State. A sixth-round pick of Washington in 2019, he looked the part as a rookie with 30 catches and 365 yards during a tumultuous season for Washington.
It’s unfortunate the ACL injury stunted his development. Now, he will look to continue his NFL career elsewhere.
