Sunday’s WNBA contest between the Washington Mystics and Seattle Storm featured a return that was a long time coming. Elena Delle Donne played in her first game in 682 days.
The last time the two-time MVP played in a game was on October 10, 2019. She was helping clinch the Mystics’ first ever WNBA championship in Game 5 of the Finals.
Delle Donne was sidelined for the 2020 season after undergoing two back surgeries. She also missed Washington’s first 21 games this season and a chance to play for Team USA in the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Sunday she was in the starting lineup. She didn’t waste time getting acclimated with her first bucket in the opening quarter.
Delle Donne displayed an array of moves. She attacked the defender off the dribble with a shimmy before hitting a turnaround fadeaway.
Delle Donne finished her first game back with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She also had three rebounds.
Unfortunately, Seattle spoiled her epic return, beating the Mystics 85-78.
Still, Delle Donne said it was “an amazing day” getting the chance to get back on the court with her teammates.
However, Elena Delle Donne admitted her situation is day-to-day. Now the focus shifts to see how her back responds after playing in her first game in 22 months. For now, seeing Delle Donne on the court was an incredible sight. The Mystics and fans have missed seeing No. 11 on the court.
