Texans claim former Washington CB Jimmy Moreland off waivers

The People’s Corner has a new team. Former Washington Football Team cornerback Jimmy Moreland was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans Tuesday, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Moreland was waived Monday after reaching an injury settlement with Washington. He was a seventh-round pick in 2019 out of James Madison, starting 10 games and appearing in 30 the past two seasons.

Moreland emerged as one of Washington’s top four cornerbacks since his rookie season. He had 86 tackles, five passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble during his time there.

However, Washington had a great deal of competition in the secondary this training camp. Ultimately, Moreland fell down the depth chart in the eyes of the coaches.

Rookie Benjamin St-Juste beat out Moreland as the third cornerback on the roster behind Kendall Fuller and William Jackson III. Tory McTyer and Darryl Roberts had better camps and Troy Apke, who switched from safety to cornerback, is a special teams gem.

Moreland is a capable starter, especially with the Houston Texans, who are in the midst of a rebuild. He joins a group of castoffs at corner which include Terrance Mitchell, Desmond King II and Vernon Hargreaves III.

The Texans traded Bradley Roby, another castoff, to the New Orleans Saints Wednesday to make room for Moreland.
