The Washington Football Team may need to adjust its quarterback depth chart for the foreseeable future. Ryan Fitzpatrick is believed to have suffered a “hip subluxation,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The injury is considered serious. Fitzpatrick will undergo an MRI Monday to determine how serious and the extent of his absence.
Fitzpatrick was injured in the second quarter of Sunday’s 20-16 season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu had an open shot at Fitzpatrick after beating Washington left tackle Charles Leno Jr on an inside pass rush.
The Washington quarterback lay on the turf before being attended to by team trainers. He did not return to the game. Backup Taylor Heinicke replaced Fitzpatrick.
Washington has a quick turnaround to Week 2. They’ll host NFC East rival, the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football. With Fitzpatrick expected to be out indefinitely, Washington will be turning the keys over to Heinicke. Kyle Allen will be elevated to backup.
Washington has confidence in their two QBs already in house and will not look outside the building in Fitzpatrick’s absence, according to Rapoport.
Heinicke completed 11-of-15 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. But, his efforts in relief proved not to be enough. Now, he’ll get a couple of days to prepare as the starter for the Giants. Allen also knows the system well. He started four games last season for Washington before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 9.
Meanwhile, the 38-year old Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 3-of-6 passes for 13 yards. He joined Washington this off-season on a one-year deal looking to push the team back to the playoffs. However, his stint in DC has been put on pause just two quarters into the season.
