The Washington Football Team is placing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on injured reserve, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. An MRI Monday confirmed Fitzpatrick suffered a hip subluxation.
The injury is not yet considered season-ending. But, he will be on IR for a minimum of three weeks per NFL rules.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera confirmed the news. Rivera added Fitzpatrick is getting a second opinion to determined the injury’s severity, according to ESPN’s John Keim. Rivera is unsure how long Fitzpatrick will be on IR.
Fan-favorite Taylor Heinicke will start in Week 2’s game against the new York Giants on Thursday Night Football. Kyle Allen has been elevated to backup.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was injured in the second quarter of Sunday’s 20-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. A missed block by left tackle Charles Leno Jr. left Fitzpatrick open to a hard hit from Chargers’ Uchenna Nwosu. Fitzpatrick was helped off the field into the locker room and did not return to the game.
The 38-year old quarterback signed a one-year, $10 million deal with Washington this offseason. He ultimately beat out Heinicke to be the starter. Sunday, Washington became the ninth different team Fitzpatrick started a game with. Now his immediate future is up in the air moving forward.
