Washington Football Team opens as big underdogs against Bills

Vegas is not a fan of the Washington Football Team in Week 3. Washington opens as a huge underdog (+9.5) in their first road game of the season against the Buffalo Bills, according to BetOnline.ag.

  • Opening Spread: Bills -9.5
  • Point Total: 47
  • Moneyline: Washington +345, Bills -425

Washington enjoyed playing their first two games home at FedEx Field. They lost a tough battle to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1. But, edged out the New York Giants on Thursday night.

Washington was favored in both games, but failed to cover in both.

The Buffalo Bills bounced back from their Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh by dismantling the Miami Dolphins 35-0 on Sunday.

This game was made way by the NFL expanding to a 17-game schedule this season. Washington won the NFC East while Buffalo won the AFC East last season.

Consider the Taylor Heinicke effect

Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke will make his second start of the season. He overcame a late interception by setting up kicker Dustin Hopkins for a game-winning field goal against the Giants as time expired.

Heinicke has completed 73.8% of his passes for 458 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in two games this season. He took over as starter this week following a hip injury to Ryan Fitzpatrick that will sideline the veteran for eight weeks.

Heinicke has established a solid connection with wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The two hooked up 11 times for 107 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets Thursday.

Buffalo defense impressive through two weeks

Those connections may be tough to come by next week in Buffalo. The Bills defense has allowed a meager 234 yards per game, which is second-fewest in the NFL through two weeks. They have also allowed the second-fewest points with 11.5 per game. Additionally, Buffalo’s pass rush has racked up eight sacks.

Heinicke’s ability to extend plays with his legs will be vital to combat the Bills strong defense.

Washington defensive line will have their chances to affect the game

Meanwhile, Washington’s pass rush and defense will have to be better than they’ve been the first two games. They struggled to contain the mobile Daniel Jones Thursday. They’ll have an equally daunting task trying to box in Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen has picked up nine rushing first downs through two games. He’s amassed 79 yards on the ground on 14 rushes. But he is keen to hold on to the football a bit longer than most quarterbacks. Thus, he has been sacked four times this season.

Washington’s loaded defensive line should have their chances to get at Allen. However, his 6-foot-5, 238-pound stature will be tough to bring down for Chase Young and company.
