Just as the Washington Wizards are set to start training camp Tuesday, the team announced forward Rui Hachimura is out indefinitely due to personal reasons. The absence is excused.
The Wizards will hold their annual Media Day on Monday. Their first preseason game is set for Oct. 5. They’ll open the regular season Oct. 20 at the Toronto Raptors.
In his second season in the NBA, Hachimura started 57 games in 2020-21. He averaged 13.8 points, shooting 47.6% from the field, including 32.8% from three.
This season he is expected to remain in the starting lineup primarily at power forward under first-year head coach Wes Unseld Jr. However, Washington has added depth at both forward positions with the addition of Kyle Kuzma and Montrezl Harrell, who may also play center.
The Wizards also have sharpshooter Davis Bertans and 2020 first-rounder Deni Avdija if Hachimura is to miss any significant time.
