The Washington Football Team has re-signed popular wide receiver Kelvin Harmon to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.
Washington waived Harmon on Aug. 15. His release came two weeks before final cut, which was surprising to many fans. At the time, Washington appeared to have a stacked wide receiver room with additions such as Curtis Samuel and rookies Dyami Brown and Dax Milne.
However, Samuel has yet to play a game this season. He was placed on injured reserve after tweaking his groin injury prior to the season opener. Samuel is expected to return Wednesday to his first eligible practice after missing the required three weeks on short-term injured reserve.
Brown has got off to a slow start. He has four catches on 12 targets for 32 yards despite playing 148 offensive snaps. Meanwhile, Milne has only played 10 offensive snaps.
Harmon was a sixth-round draft pick of Washington in 2019. He emerged as a solid secondary option in the passing game alongside Terry McLaurin. But a torn ACL during an offseason workout forced him to miss the entire 2020 season.
He returned for this year’s training camp, but appeared to be the odd man out of the numbers game at receiver. He recently had a workout with the New Orleans Saints, but did not land a deal.
Now Kelvin Harmon will get a second opportunity with Washington. If Washington is unable to get more production at receiver beyond McLaurin, eyes will be focused on Harmon’s development and timeline to get back on the field.
