The Washington Football Team is making a roster adjustment to their tight end position. Logan Thomas is being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. He is expected to be out for at least four weeks.
To help fill his void, Washington has signed tight end Jace Sternberger to their 53-man roster from the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. Sternberger’s agent, Mike McCarthy, announced the signing.
Thomas suffered the injury on the final drive of the first quarter. He pulled up on a route and immediately hobbled to the sideline, throwing his helmet to the ground in frustration. He has 12 catches on 14 targets for 117 yards and two touchdown this season.
Initial word was Thomas would be week-to-week with the injury. Obviously, that diagnosis changed. Now, Washington will have to turn to Ricky Seals-Jones, rookie John Bates and Sternberger.
It’s unclear what the addition of Sternberger means for project tight end Sammis Reyes. Earlier this week, Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Reyes could be brought up from the practice squad in lieu of Thomas’ injury.
Sternberger was a third-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2019 out of Kansas. He played 18 games with the Packers over the past two seasons. He had 12 catches, 114 yards and a touchdown — all in 2020.
He was suspended the first two games of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The Packers waived him last month before he signed to the Seahawks’ practice squad.
