Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke grew up a Green Bay Packers fan along with his late father. So when he thought he scored a touchdown in the third quarter against the Packers, he naturally ran over the stands and did the Lambeau leap.
Unfortunately, the ruling on the field of a touchdown was overturned by review. Officials ruled Heinicke gave himself up on the dive towards the end zone. He landed just short. Thus the extra effort was nullified.
The ruling turned a touchdown into fourth-and-goal for Washington. And then disaster hit.
Heinicke attempted a QB sneak. But, he lost the ball going up. He regained control of the football but his forward progress was stopped.
Washington challenged the call. However, the ruling on the field stood to the chagrin of head coach Ron Rivera.
The score remained 21-7. Washington would go for it on fourth down later on in the game and missed. They were 0-for-3 on fourth down attempts en route to a 24-10 loss.
After the game Heinicke disagreed with the rulings on both third and fourth down.
“I don’t want to get into specifics, but I feel like I was in there both times,” Heinicke said per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “I don’t want to get fined up here, but I feel like I was in there both times.”
Ironically, the Packers had not stopped an opposing offense all season in the red zone until that point.
In the end it was another disappointing outing for Heinicke and Washington, who are now 2-5 on the season.
