The Washington Football Team defensive Montez Sweat a non-displaced fracture in his jaw in Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. Sweat is expected to be out for one month. Grant Paulsen of 106.7 the Fan was the first to report Sweat’s injury.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport adds Sweat’s injury won’t require surgery, however, he cannot have physical contact for a month.
Sweat played through the injury. However, he played 31 of Washington’s 51 defensive snaps. He was on the field for 58% of the snaps, his lowest percentage of plays this season. He finished with two quarterback hits.
Ben Standig of The Athletic the injury was discovered until Monday.
Sweat has never missed a game in his three-year NFL career. Washington is on a bye this week. Their next game will be Nov. 14 against Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The bye will give him one less game to miss.
A first-round draft pick in 2019, Sweat is one-half of Washington’s dynamic pass rushing duo alongside 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young. Washington is off to a bad start with a 2-6 record. They have lost four straight games. News of losing Sweat for an extended length of time adds to the disappointing season thus far.
This season, Sweat has 19 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles.
Jason Smith-Williams should get the bulk of work in place of Sweat. Smith-Williams recorded a sack in 19 snaps against the Broncos.
