Washington LB Coach says Landon Collins is not a linebacker: ‘I don’t coach Landon’

Washington Football Team safety Landon Collins has moved closer to the line of scrimmage in attempt to improve Washington’s defense. The adjusted role has him playing more like an off-ball linebacker. But, don’t call him a linebacker.

That’s because Collins maintains he is a safety, and Washington’s coaching staff does as well. Washington linebackers coach Steve Russ was clear “He’s not a linebacker.”

Collins remains in the defensive backs room and not in linebackers meetings. Washington’s defense is more of a 4-2-5 base defense with Collins sinking down in the box. It’s similar to how the Seattle Seahawks use safety Jamal Adams.

Collins has been adamant he doesn’t like playing linebacker. But, there is history with him playing more like an off-ball linebacker. He did so with the New York Giants, which led to Pro Football Focus labeling Collins the “best off-ball linebacker” heading into free agency in 2019.

He signed a six-year, $84 million deal with Washington, but as a safety. Through his first two-plus seasons Collins has struggled to fit in Washington, especially in pass coverage.

Jon Bostic’s season-ending pectoral injury and rookie struggles of first-round pick Jamin Davis forced defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio’s hand. Washington head coach Ron Rivera talked Collins into playing more downhill.

Whether he is a linebacker or safety, doesn’t really matter. It’s how he is playing. And it’s been well since the role adjustment. Collins’ success has impacted Washington’s defense as a whole.

Despite Washington’s four-game losing streak, the defense has forced a turnover in each of their last four games. After allowing 31 points per game in their five games, Washington’s defense cut that average down by a touchdown the last three games.
