As expected the Washington Football Team has placed defensive end Montez Sweat on injured reserve. Sweat fractured his jaw in Washington’s last game two weeks ago against the Denver Broncos.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera announced Sweat will be out four-to-six weeks.
The Football Team signed defensive end Bunmi Rotimi from the practice squad to replace Sweat. Rotimi went undrafted out of Old Dominion in 2018. He has played in the Alliance of American Football and the XFL in his journey to the NFL.
In his third year in the NFL, Sweat has four sacks through eight games. Only defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has more sacks on the team.
Sweat’s absence will open the door for Jason Smith-Williams and Shaka Toney to step up. Meanwhile, the onus will shift to last year’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young to produce more.
Young has 1.5 sacks through the first eight games of the season.
