It’s “highly unlikely” Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick returns to the field this season, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Fitzpatrick suffered a hip subluxation in Week 1. He was expected to return to the field in eight weeks by treating the injury without surgery. However, the first MRI showed no progress and was described as “alarming” according to a source to Rapoport.
Fitzpatrick is still dealing with swelling and pain in the hip and groin area. He underwent a second MRI this week that revealed “some progress,” but it’s apparent he is still a long way off of returning.
He has not even started the rehab process because of the swelling and pain. Therefore the 38-year old is still undergoing treatment.
Ryan Fitzpatrick signed a one-year, $10 million contract with Washington in the offseason. He’s played for nine team in his career. The hope was he would be the right quarterback to manage their offense behind a strong defense.
Unfortunately, Fitzpatrick played only two quarters this season.
Taylor Heinicke has taken every snap at quarterback since Fitzpatrick’s injury in the second quarter of the season-opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. Heinicke will take the field Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for his eighth straight start.
Washington’s latest struggles have made the play of Heinicke a topic of discussion. The Football Team has lost four straight and enter this week with a 2-6 record. If there is a quarterback change, it will be Kyle Allen next in line with Fitzpatrick expected not to return this season.
