Last year’s NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has suffered a devastating end to his disappointing sophomore season. Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera confirmed defensive end Chase Young is “pretty much” done for the season with a “leg injury.”
Young went down with a non-contact injury Sunday in the second quarter of Washington’s 29-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A cart was brought out for him as he laid on the turf. But, he refused the cart and was assisted off the field.
He was ruled out of the game shortly afterwards. Initial reports surfaced before the game was even over that Washington feared Young suffered a torn ACL.
On Monday, Rivera wouldn’t confirm the injury was to his ACL. He stressed “leg injury.”
Rivera refused to go give further details into the injuries.
Nevertheless, Young’s season is over. Last year as the second overall draft pick, he emerged as a leader and catalyst to Washington’s 7-9 NFC East-winning season. He finished with 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three recoveries en route to Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Young entered 2021 with high expectations along with Washington’s talented defensive line. However, he struggled just as much as the rest of the defense.
Chase Young finishes the season with 1.5 sacks and four quarterback hits in nine games. He also had two pass defenses and two forced fumbles.
Young’s pending absence is laminated with fellow defensive end Montez Sweat being out for a month with a fractured jaw.
