The Washington Football Team will be even shorter at defensive end Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Rookie Shaka Toney has been ruled out with a concussion, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Tight end Ricky Seal-Jones is also ruled out with a hip injury.
Toney suffered the concussion during Wednesday’s practice, per Ben Standig of The Athletic.
Washington has already lost its two premiere pass rushers. Chase Young is out for the season with a knee injury believed to be a torn ACL. Montez Sweat will miss his second game with a fractured jaw. Sweat is expected to be out at least a month.
Toney was a seventh-round draft pick this year by Washington out of Penn State as they added depth to their edge. He had been active just three games this season. But, he was in line to get an increase in defensive snaps with Young and Sweat out.
Washington is now down to Jason Smith-Williams, Casey Toohill and Bunmi Rotimi at defensive end for Carolina. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio will have to get creative to bring pressure against the returning Cam Newton, who will start for the Panthers.
