Maryland jumps to No. 2 women’s poll after signature Baylor win

The Maryland Terrapins are No. 2 in the nation in the latest Associated Press top 25 women’s basketball poll. The 6-0 Terrapins are coming off a signature 76-73 win over No. 6 Baylor on Sunday.

Maryland entered the season ranked No. 4 with high expectations of the Final Four. They breezed through the early portion of their season, winning their first five games by an average margin of 34.0 points.

Six Terrapins players are averaging double figures in scoring led Angel Reese with 19.0 points per game. Ashley Owusu is averaging 16.5 points. All of this without superstar junior Diamond Miller who has been limited to 15 minutes with a knee injury.

South Carolina remains No. 1 after their impressive 73-57 win over then-2 Connecticut on Monday. The Gamecocks received all 30 first-place votes. UConn fell to No. 3.

Maryland’s Big Ten rival Indiana comes in at No. 4 and NC State rounds out the top-5. Baylor stays at six. Stanford is seventh followed by Iowa, Arizona and Louisville.

Maryland could strengthen their resume this week. They face No. 5 NC State and No. 7 Stanford in the Baha Mar Hoops in the Bahamas.
